EAGLE BAY EPIC … Adventure is Back on the Scene in Scenic WA!
With a year that has seen so few public events taking place in the world, thanks to COVID, we were thrilled to be invited back to Dunsborough by event organisers Rapid Ascent – this time to film the inaugural Eagle Bay Epic Adventure Race held on 7/8 November 2020.
Typical of a Rapid Ascent event, it was hugely popular with over 1,000 competitors, including a “short” course (13km Mountain Bike + 1.2km Ocean Swim + 5km Paddle + 7.9km Trail Run), a kids’ cross country obstacle course, and the very entertaining first ever “WA Wife Carrying Championships” on the Saturday, and the long course on the Sunday.
We were engaged only for the Saturday events (Sunday’s long course being similar scenery but with the competitors more spread out) which meant some very careful planning was required to ensure we had everything covered. This necessitated detailed research the week before – checking maps, expected course times for the majority of competitors, weather, and planning a shot list. A full recce and run-through of course times was done the day before, noting exact times for each of our 3 camera crew to be at their chosen filming points and with which items of equipment.
We were blessed with glorious weather on the day – both for the competitors and the film crew – with a 25 degree sunny day and a slight breeze, and certainly got lots of exercise ourselves as most of the course was only accessible on foot (and a huge thankyou to St. John’s Ambulance who did an excellent fix of John’s leg after he took a tumble on the coastal running section - he’s now fully recovered).
Then it was back to the studio to download footage and photographs from 8 cameras in order to provide our client with photos that evening, and a video within 3 days.
All in a day’s work? More like a week’s work for the day… but we loved every minute of it, especially the friendly competitors, volunteers and event crew, and of course the amazing location – Eagle Bay Brewing Co and the coastal beauty of the Dunsborough / Naturaliste area. Thanks again to Rapid Ascent, their local WA crew headed up by Richard Renn, Eagle Bay Brewing Co (great beer, delicious food!), and the fantastic WA folks who took part. Bring it on next year!
Here is the highlights video we produced for the event - enjoy!
